Last Night’s IABC/CPRS Holiday Mix and Mingle Party

Last night I attended the IABC and CPRS Holiday Mix and Mingle Party. Located on top of the Delta Hotel in the Penthouse conference room, around 160 Ottawa-based, Communicators, Public Relations people, marketers and creative types all gathered, while raising money for a great cause.

I still consider myself new to Ottawa, I’ve been here for just under a year now. I’ve often heard people say that Ottawa is a small town and that everybody is connected. I got a taste of that last night.

Early on in the evening, I was talking to the event photographer about her camera and the DSLR game (we both shoot on Canon). As the small talk progressed, we found out that we both went to the same high school. On top of that, it turned out that I had played hockey with her brother for one season and he had been coached by my dad. Small world.

I figured that would be the end of it, but there was more. One of the event sponsors was the organization where my dad works. They had a few people on hand and one of them knew who he was and seemed to have worked with him on various projects.

I got to meet lots of interesting people who are working in both the public and private sector. There’s a lot of cool people doing cool things in Ottawa. The fact that this is place has the reputation of a boring government town is completely false. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find lots of interesting things are happening here.

All in all a good night. And it all went to a good cause, raising around $3,00 for the United Way Ottawa. Woot!

In case you’re wondering, the next IABC event in Ottawa happens on January 23.
